In the mid-70s, the need arose in the Republic to improve dental care for the population. By order of the Ministry of Health, a dental department was opened at the Republican Medical School. The first set consisted of 2 groups of students on the basis of 11 classes, the groups became part of the pharmaceutical department.

From the 1998-1999 academic year, for the first time, students were recruited into groups for training in the state language in the specialties “Dentistry” and “Orthopedic Dentistry”.

In May 1999, on the basis of the RMK, the I Republican competition “Dental technician – 99” was held among students of graduating groups of the specialty “Orthopedic Dentistry”. At this competition, the first place was taken by a student of our college Yun Artem. The competition has become traditional and is now held annually in May. Students of our college regularly win prizes in the competition.

During the period of the department’s existence, 1654 dental technicians have been trained (including 257 in Kazakh), 127 dentists, 37 dental assistants, and 105 dentists. (including in the Kazakh language – 12).

It is gratifying that graduates of our college of different years now work as teachers in their own educational institution. Currently, the department is training in the specialty “Orthopedic Dentistry” with the qualification “Dental technician”. Training is conducted in the state and Russian languages. The lesson is conducted by experienced teachers with the highest and first category.

Since the 2010-2011 academic year, students are trained according to new educational standards, in the development of which the teachers of the department took an active part.

The equipment and teaching aids received under the Japanese grant served as a great help in improving the equipment of the practical classes. Thanks to them, a dentist’s office equipped with modern dental equipment, a foundry were organized, practical classes on the manufacture of metal-ceramic prostheses were introduced into the training program.

Dental tables were purchased in the amount of 65 pieces, equipped with electric spatulas, a movable control lamp, an exhaust vacuum cleaner, a dental portable motor, a gas burner, an air gun, and a viewing magnifying glass.

The trainees undergo educational-production and industrial practice in a medical facility in Almaty, where, under the guidance of experienced dentists and dental technicians, they carry out orders for dental prosthetics.

New modern technologies that are being introduced into the dental service require the training of highly qualified personnel. Therefore, the teachers of the department have great tasks to train a new generation of specialists. Graduates of the specialty “Orthopedic Dentistry” should not only be competitive, but also be managers, economists, skillfully promote a healthy lifestyle. For this, the new educational standards provide for courses in valeology and professional ethics and deontology.
